COPE IN THE WIRE

This month's Wire magazine features a lengthy article/interview on Julian by Rob Young, described as How the modern antiquarian, megalithic European and Odinist rock 'n' roll heretic orchestrates elegant chaos with his new group Black Sheep. Includes excellent photographs by Jake Walters.

For full details visit: www.thewire.co.uk

The Peggy Suicide Deluxe Edition (mentioned below) is now available in stores and online. Despite the fact that there was an error in the printing of the booklet where pages seem to have duplicated, it is still a sumptuous double cd package and a welcome edition to the Cope catalogue.

Also, check out YouTube for clips of the Black Sheep’s first full ensemble performance at the recent Bristol Festival, which consisted of one continuous musical piece with seven movements/parts:

1. Buy the Revolution (full ensemble)
2. La Pasionaria (Acoustic Division w/ David Wrench)
3. The Raid (David Wrench solo)
4. Get Out of Bedminster (full ensemble)
5. Cromwell (Electronic Division solo)
6. Crazy Horse (Antronhy Ø solo/Sheep filming)
7. More (full ensemble)

And while you're at YouTube also check out the extensive clips posted of Julian at his recent gigs in Sardinia and Rome.

FLOORED GENIUS 4

Also recently released via Head Heritage is the next installment in the Floored Genius series. Floored Genius 4, subtitled The Best of Foreign Radio, Rare TV Appearances, Festival Songs & Miscellaneous Lost Classics 1983-2009, is exactly what it says on the box and is described at HH thus:

Containing 17 tracks culled from over a quarter century of rare TV appearances, foreign radio sessions, festival songs and lost studio rarities, FLOORED GENIUS 4 is the latest installment in this hugely successful series of Julian Cope compilations. Even better, while this 70-minute-long collection brims over with melody, keen lyrical insights and raucous rock‘n’roll, almost all of the material is previously unknown, and only two of the songs have ever before enjoyed a proper release. On FLOORED GENIUS 4, therefore, Cope fans receive almost an hour’s worth of previously unknown material, experiments and re-workings. All-in-all, this is another fascinating insight into the mind of the Archdrude.

Tracklist:

01. I Ain't Saying
02. When All You Got is a Hammer, Everything Looks Like a Nail
03. Pre-Hysterical Blues
04. Sub-Mission
05. A Sassenach Tune
06. The Shrines Are Ablaze
07. The Glam Dicenn
08. Mad Clothes
09. I've Got My TV & My Pills
10. We Gotta Get Out of this Place
11. Mr. Self Respect
12. I Got With God
13. Sleeping Gas ’90
14. I Gotta Walk
15. Due to Lack of Interest, Tomorrow Has Been Cancelled
16. Sucker Strut
17. Somebody Spiked My LSD

HEATHEN FRONTIERS IN SOUND

Finally a quick plug for the excellent new album Heathen Frontiers In Sound by Black Sheep singer/songwriter Christophe F. Released on the Trilithon label and available in the Head Heritage Merchandiser where it is described as follows:

HEATHEN FRONTIERS IN SOUND is the brand new album from Black Sheep member and former Universal Panzies leader Christophe F. Recorded exclusively with the help of other Black Sheep, and released on Holy McGrail’s brand new Trilithon Records label, this spiritual record sees the artist in a feisty, nay, belligerent mood. Over eight long songs, Christophe brings forth a superb and succinct set of lyrics explaining the nature of Revolution and the manner in which, he believes, this can all be effected. In true William S. Burroughsian fashion, Christophe brings us names, Greedhead companies, heck, even a few addresses. From the opening notes of the opening song ‘Gringo Blues’, listeners are pitched into a whirlpool of bitter anecdotes, eloquent poetic thought, Uber percipient comments and all delivered via catchy bastard tunes.

Tracklist:

1. Gringo Blues
2. My Heathen Revolution
3. Talkin' Revolution Blues
4. I Never Write Slow Love Songs
5. Black Sheep Blues
6. Brother Motherfucker
7. Crucifiction Blues
8. Heathen Frontiers in Sound

BLACK SHEEP AT THE BRISTOL FESTIVAL

It's just been announced that the Black Sheep will be headlining the Croft Stage at this year's Bristol Festival on Sunday, September 20 at 8:40 pm. The festival web site describes it as:

"Julian Cope's action group Black Sheep are a leathery ten-piece ensemble of outsider reprobates whose spirited performances upon massed orchestral percussion, mellotron 400s and massed acoustic guitars summon dead ancestors and memories of times past in an effort to achieve total pshychic meltdown."

For full festival details visit:

www.thebristolfestival.org

Also recently announced is the upcoming release of the Peggy Suicide Deluxe Edition. In the same vein as the Jehovahkill Deluxe Edition it is a 2-cd set that sees disk one as a re-release of the original album and disk two being a compilation of the various b-sides and remixes all housed in a box set.

The set is currently available for preordering at hmv.co.uk for £8.99 and at amazon.co.uk for £11.99, with the release date set for September 7, 2009.

BRAIN DONOR - WASTED FUZZ EXCESSIVE

Much belated news now, but still worth mentioning, was Head Heritage's release of a new Brain Donor album Wasted Fuzz Excessive earlier this year. Described at HH as follows:

"WASTED FUZZ EXCESSIVE is the long awaited follow-up to Brain Donor's 2006CE's epic DRAIN'D BONER, this new album continuing in those dark traditions of declaimed metallic poetry, but extending further into works of epic construction and length. Driven by No Wave riffs and hoary proto-metal assaults, this Donor record burns at both ends. Here it hangs static and taut, whilst there it endures a rocket fired up its ass due to Mister E's sudden and marvellous acceleration. The seven songs pan out across over an hour of music, and include Cope's infamous stereo bass solo 'Shadow of My Corpse', previewed on his last tour. For those with a mind to listen to the far out, have it destroyed by the might of WASTED FUZZ EXCESSIVE. U-Know it makes sense … to somebody!"

The initial announcement of the album read:

"Suddenly it's here! A new Brain Donor album? It's like we'd all almost given up on DRAIN'D BONER's sequel ever surfacing. Cope talked about WASTED FUZZ EXCESSIVE a lot, then silence ... BLACK SHEEP came and went, and suddenly it's here. Why the hold-up? One track - an enormous behemoth of a steaming soul riff - needed a brass arrangement. This took a fucking age. It kept getting cancelled. It kept getting cancelled again. Anyway, it's suddenly here. WASTED FUZZ EXCESSIVE. Utterly balls to the wall, lyrically bananas but full of such oomph, such Mr E-driven acceleration that - despite its full-metal leanings - the Donor of 2009CE remains entirely itself."

Tracklist:

Invocation: The Mead of Fimbulthul
01. GATES OF SKAGERRAK
02. DEATH BECOMES YOU
03. DYSLEXIA RULES K.O.
04. EMERGING/SHADOW OF MY CORPSE
05. FRANKENSTEIN
06. FOKKINGER SLAG/THE HANGING

Buy it now for £11.99 at the Head Heritage Merchandiser.
